Holding On To Memories with Hallmark

As a writer, I tend to hold on to words. If they are in a little note from my kids, or a love letter from my husband, or a special birthday card from my mom and dad. Over the years, some Christmas cards and birthday cards have held special meaning to me, like the time my best friend and I were pregnant at the same time, we she wrote about what it will be like for our children to meet and play together. Or the time my other best friend wrote a long message in a sympathy card when my Mama had passed away. And then there was this special card given to me from a friend as well. These cards take on so much more meaning because they hold memories that are printed in time for me.

I still find greeting cards, like letters, to be so important. Sure, we can buy a beautiful Hallmark card that an artist has written words that sound pretty much perfect to our sentiments for a loved one, but it’s the personalization that make a card even more special.

I love time ago, I started writing letters to my boys in greeting cards. It was a way of remembering the milestones and the year we were in together. You can read about it here.

Each of my boys have a little plastic bin with their special cards tucked deep inside their closet, and one day when they are older, they will be able to look at the cards and read them with fond memories.

These Paper Wonder Valentines cards are also a sweet display. ($8.99 exclusively at Walmart)

Oddly enough, I hadn’t made a special box for my letters and notes from my husband. It’s always the case, isn’t it? As a mama, I collected for the boys, but as a wife, I stuffed letters and cards in any drawer or closet. Not so romantic. Lucky for me, I was reminded of all of this when Hallmark Canada sent me my Valentine’s Day package with new products and cards. This year, they have created a beautiful faux-book box with the title, The Story of Us. It has a magnetic close and it’s fairly large in size, so I think it could hold most of the meaningful cards and notes from my husband to me over the past 20 years. I really appreciate it because it is pretty to look at and easy to fill without worrying about making a scrapbook to commemorate our relationship. I plan on adding things like movie tickets and a few photos as well.

Like you I save all the cards we get from special occasions, but they live in piles, in a bag of in with the craft supplies…not a great arrangement! I need a better system!
