Only Murders in the Building Season Four Review – Family MOE Review

The wait is officially over, everyone. Season four of Only Murders in the Building will be exclusively available on Disney+ in Canada starting August 27th, with new episodes on Tuesdays. My son and I were offered advance screening of the whole season for review, and we have so much to tell you. As always, there are no spoilers.

When the first season of Only Murders was announced, it grabbed my attention because two of my absolute favourite actors are in it; Martin Short and Steve Martin. As a kid growing up in the 80s, these two actors were in so many of the movies I watched, as well as on Saturday Night Live.

But for whatever reason, I didn’t make the time to sit and watch the show immediately. Then my son introduced me to the series because he liked it, and the two of us have been enjoying it together ever since. We looked forward to new episodes each week. It was our time to enjoy a new series together and talk about the whodunit hypothesis. We were shocked with the season three finale. It left us wanting answers! We couldn’t wait to know if there would, in fact, be a fourth season, and if there would be, how fast would the season come out for us to watch more?!

What is Only Murders in the Building, Season Four About?

*Please note, spoilers only for season three here. The Only Murders fans were left with a massive cliffhanger in season three, where Sazz Pataki is murdered in the finale episode. My son and I were both totally surprised and upset – we loved Sazz’s character, played by Jane Lynch.

As I mentioned, I cannot give out any spoilers, but I will share the synopsis of the season with you.

In season four of “Only Murders in the Building”, our amateur podcasting trio wrestles with the shocking events at the end of season three surrounding Charles’ stunt double and friend Sazz Pataki. Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. As Charles, Oliver and Mabel race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents.

Our Reactions to the Fourth Season

My son’s first word to describe the season is captivating. We felt this season runs faster, with more action, twists and turns. We both agreed, the new settings of L.A. and the west tower of their apartment building gives the story another level of interest and excitement.

The three main characters, Mabel, Charles and Oliver, are faced with new struggles to overcome, and it is interesting to see how they work together and help each other in different ways. This season shows the trio’s friendship growing into a stronger bond. The new characters are witty and entertaining and create new tensions between the original cast. We can’t give anything away, but we definitely had our favourite new characters, and our not so favourite new characters. But that makes the season that much more interesting.

My son’s final thought on this fourth season is that he had been waiting for the new season to come out for while, it was nice to see the show and the characters again. He felt really lucky to have pre-screened the whole season, and he actually wants to watch it again. Something tells me, we both will, together.

In this fourth season of the original comedy series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Michael Cyril Creighton, expect to see stellar performances with special guest stars including Meryl Streep, Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Richard Kind, Jane Lynch, Melissa McCarthy, Kumail Nanjiani, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Molly Shannon, and more.

Only Murders In The Building Is Perfect for Teens

Because of the content and the language, I shied away from the series at first with my boys. I would not recommend this series for younger children or even tweens. However my boys are teenagers, and the settings, actors and theme of the story (podcasting, theater, movie production) are all a win for my son and me. There is mystery and humour, which make the series perfect to watch with your teen.

If you are struggling to find something good to watch with your teen, this series is fresh and new. Catch up with seasons one to three, because season four is coming at you! And if you are already a fan of the series, you are in for a treat, we loved this season the most.

Only Murders In The Building, season four is available exclusively on Disney+ starting August 27th.
