Give the Gift of Literacy {Plus a Giveaway!}

It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since I joined the Board of Directors at Literacy Unlimited. It’s been a fantastic experience getting to know the team that has devoted so much time and energy to help adults with low literacy in the West Island of Quebec.  I have enjoyed this experience so much and I look forward to the exciting new projects we have coming up in the new year (stay tuned!)

We have been working at promoting our services for Montreal West Islanders because we want more people to know about this incredible organization that has been around for decades. Through free one-on-one tutoring, social events and activities and community collaborations, Literacy Unlimited offers a wealth of learning for everyone.

It’s difficult for people to believe that over 45% of people in the West Island struggle with literacy. What’s even harder to believe is that this number will likely increase in the next few years. Literacy is not only reading and writing, but also financial (bill payments, credit management) and digital literacy (social media, emails, new tech), as well as workplace literacy (applying for a job, preparing a CV), health literacy (emails for a doctor appoint or understanding drug labels) and food literacy (nutrition knowledge, food prep).

When you see how literacy touches every aspect of your life, it’s easy to understand that it is the key to reducing poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity, while improving mental health and well-being. Literacy is a basic right that everyone deserves, and it is never too late to discover untapped potential through learning. In reality, we are all learning, every day in different ways.

After spending a year of learning about this massive connection to help our community in multiple ways, it has become a passion project for me to get more eyes on Literacy Unlimited. In fact, I have become an ambassador for the organization, so you will see me out and about at local events, talking more about this great organization. I will also be sharing more fascinating facts on literacy and how you can help in future posts right here.

We are currently reaching the end of our annual appeal on December 31st. The money we raise will help us to do more in our community. Now would be a great time to donate and / or consider gifting a donation to a friend or family member this holiday season, it would be so nice to have your help.

My favourite book this year was definitely “The Artist’s Way”. I loved going through the exercises & processes Julia recommends and found it very inspiring during a difficult time in my life.
