Learning #RBCRewards101 for Back-to-School

When you think of back-to-school shopping, what do you think of?

Spending a lot? Being frugal?

I bet you would never think of making money, right? Well with RBC’s Rewards program, that is essentially what you get.

I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to points cards. I kept a few big store points cards for years, and after about a year’s worth of buying a bunch of items at said stores, I got an average of $10-25 to use at those stores only. Eventually, I gave up all the cards, and in reality had a bit of a grudge on the stores for making me feel undervalued after years of loyalty.

And when it comes to getting points credit cards, I often think it will be the same thing. My husband and I have only one credit card that racks up points for travelling. But now I’ve been introduced to RBC’s rewards program and I’m feeling very tempted to sign up. It is a win-win scenario and here’s why.

With RBC Rewards, you redeem points every time you use the card, which can be accumulated to ‘purchase’ gift cards at LINK from over 50 different stores. This seems like a pretty basic plan for a lot of rewards cards. But here is the part I thought was really great. If you do your online shopping (which you totally should for back-to-school!), you can go to the RBC eMall first and link to your favourite online shops to redeem up to 12 times more points.

This was new information to my friend who already had an RBC Rewards card. She was thrilled to know that the stores she already shops at were linked in the RBC Rewards eMall. There are actually over 250 retailers linked up! To understand better, here’s one of the videos RBC created starring Anjum Nayyar of Masalamommas.com:

RBC Rewards members can redeem points for:

  • Gift cards (at over 50 top retailers)
  • Merchandise
  • Best Buy and Future Shop products (over 100,000+ products)

RBC Rewards members can earn points by:

  • Using your card – At least 1 RBC Rewards points per $ spent using your card
  • Shopping through the eMall (RBCRewards.com) at up to 250 retailers

So with this new information, I would say that back-to-school shopping might actually bring you some serious extras with the RBC Rewards card, don’t you think?
