More and more you hear of great motivational speakers or business gurus talking about their terrible childhood, where they had to do everything for themselves and there was no one there to help them. That’s how they made it. Then of course, we all know someone who is not dealing with adulting too well. Was it their childhood had parents taking care of them all the time? Who knows.
There is something to be said about teaching your children to get things done themselves. Learning that skill early on is a great advantage for when they will be sharing a dorm with some poor slob. Being independent doesn’t just happen, you need to learn it.
I recently wrote a piece for Momresource.ca about Raising Independent Kids (click on the title to read it in full). I have a lot to say about having kids learn things on their own, but it has to start somewhere. And kids need our help for that. Gone are the days that mama needs to do everything around the house. Please feel free to leave a comment below on how you help your kids be more independent.
