Thanksgiving with Steven and Chris

Set of Steven and Chris at CBC Toronto

If you follow me on Twitter (which you totally should because I’m really active there and share lots of fun and interesting stuff), you may have seen that during my Toronto trip for Blissdom, I went to see a taping of Steven and Chris. It was so much fun!

My awesome friend and fabulous blogger, Julia (a.k.a Nugglemama) set it all up and we ended up being seven or so bloggers together in the front rows for the taping. We had a blast. Want to guess how long the taping was for a 45 minute show? Three hours!! But it didn’t matter; we still had so much fun!

We were lucky because the day we went, they were taping the Thanksgiving episode. The set was gorgeously decorated with fall colours. Here are some photos of our experience:

Just being in the CBC building was exciting for me. The hall was filled with posters of the top shows.

I tweeted Dragon’s Den with this pic telling them I think they should have another lady on the show 🙂

I got to touch the tree from the great Canadian children’s show, Mr. Dressup. I actually got emotional about it, since it was such a special part of my childhood.

THE Mr. Dressup tree!

I’ve been watching Steven and Chris since they were the Designer Guys back in 2001. With two more shows, a how-to book in fashion and design, a furniture, textiles, rugs, and accessories line available across Canada and the US, Steven and Chris have become a household name here in Canada for sure. Recently, their show Steven and Chris has been syndicated in the US market as well. I would have never dreamed I’d be able to shake their hands and sit in their audience years later.

Aside from having so much fun, I learned a few things too!

  • I can’t wait to cook Indian food now – I’m not scared to mess it up anymore, Chef Vikram Vij!
  • A coat of copper spray paint can make mundane things look fabulous for fall (even if the spray can doesn’t work on camera, Chris)
  • Did you know that giving raisins to your kids as a snack at school is not the best choice? Dr. Laurel Linetsky-Fleisher explained why.
  • My favourite snack of all time can land me a pricey trip to the dentist if I eat the wrong pieces.

To learn all about the above, go ahead and watch the Thanksgiving episode. See if you can spot me and my awesome blogger friends!

Top 6  tips on attending a TV show taping:

  1. Go to the ladies’ room before you sit down for the three hour taping (we were reminded several times while waiting to be brought in)
  2. Be prepared to smile nonstop for a few hours (imagine you are a movie star out at a premier)
  3. Wear a solid colour (we were advised in advance to wear bold solids but I stuck with black and white)
  4. On the same note, wear something you feel comfortable sitting in for a long while
  5. If you are allowed, pack a mini water bottle (and maybe even a tiny snack) for in between takes.
  6. Have fun! How often do you get to do this?! Enjoy the moment!

Would I do it again? Absolutely! I really did have so much fun. I’m hoping to take my sister one day to see the George Stroumboloupoulos Tonight show since we’re both big fans. So tell me, have you ever seen a live taping of a show? Did you have as much fun as me? If you haven’t, would you go now? Do it! I promise it will make for a fun day!

I went to go see Steven and Chris almost a year ago and was picked before hand to showcase a piece of furniture to be judged by the audience to keep or dump. My lamp got cut from the show but my mom and I had a blast. I couldn’t believe how long it took too! It’s always fun to see yourself on tv too!!!

Looks like you had a lot of fun.
