Holiday Traditions with Villaggio

Whether you are a traditional mama or a new and modern mama, you undoubtedly have some traditions you are making as an annual occasion with your children. This Christmas I did some of Grandma MOE’s traditional recipes. She let me take the reins this year to test out some favourites! We had tortieres, sugar cookies and our traditional family turkey dinner. To me, carrying on traditions is a big part of making history with your family.

I really believe that food brings people together. And what better way to show the ones you love how much you care, than making them a special meal? Some of my fondest holiday memories are being in the kitchen with my mama.  From a young age, Grandma MOE included us in the cooking, baking and cleaning up. Surprisingly, she didn’t realize how much she taught us until these last couple of years. I do a lot of cooking and baking for, and with, my children and what I know, I learned mostly from her. So that alone is a celebratory tradition that has been made.

In the new year, I plan on branching out my blog and sharing more recipes and how-to’s in the kitchen. The more I talk with people, the more I realize, not everyone has had the same special experiences I have had in the kitchen with my mama. So in an effort to share that with you and give you some ideas to share with your children, I will be writing more about what happens in the kitchen at Mama MOE’s.

That being said, I am excited to share a very simple recipe (in pictures) that is sure to please your children on a special holiday morning (New Year ’s Day, perhaps?). French toast is an easy and delicious change to the mundane everyday breakfasts. I usually make French toast on a special holiday morning or the morning of someone’s birthday. This year, for Christmas morning, I prepared French toast to start the day on a sweet start.

Maple Leaf offered me a chance to try out their decadent Villaggio sliced bread and it was the perfect selection for French toast. The name for the bread is fitting because the bread is a thicker, fluffier bread, commonly known as Italian bread. I tried the Villaggio 100% Whole Wheat bread and was very happy with the taste. Papa MOE noted that there were more slices in the bag compared to other brands and cost less. Even though the bread was whole wheat, there was no lack of taste and the fluffiness of the thicker slice was still there, even after being toasted.
For the decadent French toast for Christmas morning, I went for the Villaggio Original white bread (I know! I never have white bread in our home! But it was a special occasion).
Lightly toast your slices of bread, in a bowl mix eggs and milk
Dunk each toasted slice, then place them on a lightly buttered frying pan until browned on both sides
Sprinkle a little cinnamon, pour your favourite maple syrup and voila!

The Villaggio bread is perfect for French toast because the thicker slices absorb the egg/milk mix more than regular slices, making each piece of French toast much more satisfying. My family loved it, and so did I! I would recommend Villaggio Sliced Bread for anyone who wants a little extra thickness to their regular sliced bread sandwiches. And of course, if you love making French toast, Villaggio sliced bread is a sure-fire winner.

My favourite is Turkey since that’s the only time that we have turkey throughout the whole year (and yes, we don’t make turkey on Thanksgiving)

My favorite holiday tradition is having appetizers for supper on Christmas Eve, and then my children get to open a new pair of pj’s (usually Christmas/Winter themed) and a new Christmas ornament that reflects their interests for the year (this year it was spongebob and lego ninjago!)
